PROBLEMS OF HEALING
We are told that the healing power is latent within all of us. in the same way that we all have incipient powers of medium-ship, if only we take the trouble to develop them. But while some people appear able to heal without any conscious develop- ment, the powers of others are so slight that attempts to stimulate them seem almost a waste of time. Silver Birch explains here why there is this apparent difference in our ability to heal:
You all have qualities of soul, and these qualities are nearer expression in some people than they are in others. As you strive for unfoldment, that quality, the psyche, the spiritual, call it what you will, unfolds and there is a closer co-operation between the instrument and the guides who work with him.
The attunement is higher, finer and closer. The rays blend into one state of beauteous harmony and, when that stage reaches its zenith, the band of workers in my world and the instrument in yours become as one in unity. The nearer you are to that state of achievement, the higher and the greater and more powerful rays that belong to our spheres can be used through the band of guides and the instrument.
(The above refers particularly to spiritual healers and not necessarily to those who practise magnetic and other forms.)
Silver Birch, discussing healing generally, once said:
WHEN you are ready to be healed, it means that the time for you to come to the spirit world is not yet, that the experience necessary for the soul through suffering of the body is over. But there are other experiences in the world of matter which the soul must have before it is ready to enter its new life. The physical suffering of the body is not the limit of human experience!
Healers are permitted to alleviate suffering because the healing enables the soul to find itself. Great as is the work of healing, there is a greater work that healers performーthey touch the souls of those who come near them and enable them to find themselves. In comparison with this, the healing of bodies is less important.
You who dwell in bodies of matter think only of lives in your world. We who have left the earth place it in its proper proportion as only a speck of your infinite lives. All your focus is wrong.
You see a poor soul suffering and, very rightly, the com-passion rises in your breast. I do not condemn that. But you only think in terms of the suffering, not realizing that the time spent in that suffering is infinitesimal compared with the compensating joys.
To you, the shadows always seem longer than the sunlight ーbut they are not. But you must also realize that not all who are sick can be healed by healers. There are laws at work, and some people the healer cannot cure.
It is no accident that when the time is ripe the sick man is healed, just as it is no accident that when the soul is ready for its new experience beyond the gate of death the physical body drops away. It is all determined by Law. But you play your part in that Law, for you are all parts of the Great Spirit.
If all the debts were paid—and they are never paidーyou would have reached the stage where pain could not touch you, for your body would be perfect. But you always contract debts, in your world and in mine.
The following conversation between Silver Birch and a
sitter gives an insight into the causes of disability:
SILVER BIRCH: There is a relationship between the body of matter and the body of spirit. Man's two bodies con-stantly react on each other. The body of matter is dependent on the body of spirit for its existence, but the body of spirit is dependent on the body of matter for its expression in the world of matter. And it is the experiences gained through the physical body that determine the growth of the body of spirit.
SITTER: Does the physical body conform to the pattern of the etheric?
Yes.
Then, if a man is ill, is it the etheric body that we should treat?
That is the object of all spiritual healing. But sometimes there are conditions that have purely physical causes. That is where the skill of the medical man comes in. But anything which affects the body of matter also affects the body of spirit, and, in the same way, anything that affects the spirit reacts on the body of matter.
Then should not the etheric body always be dealt with?
Not necessarily. It depends on where the trouble begins. If it is a trouble of the spirit body, then the healing could be effected through the body of spirit. But if the trouble is caused by something that is purely physical, then it can be dealt with by physical means easier than by spiritual means.
You are a spirit now, but while you are expressing yourself through a body of matter, as well as through a body of spirit, you are dependent on the body of matter for the sensations of the world of matter. Everything that happens in your world affects your body of matter and, in turn, your body of spirit.
At the same time, everything that affects your spiritual body reacts on your physical body. There are forces of action and reaction at work all the time. There is a constant interplay of forces, physical, mental, and spiritual.
Would an illness caused by infection come through purely physical causes?
Not necessarily, because there are many diseases that have no real physical causcs, but start with the spirit.
What causes those diseases?
Selfishness, greed, avarice. You know the story of the Nazarene who told the man: “Your sins are forgiven.” You must realize that there are both physical and spiritual causes for your disorders. They could all be treated in the same way, but some are more easily treated in the physical way. But, though the etheric body is affected by illness and some-times even causes illness, there is no real illness in the spiritual body. It is a defect in its adjustment with the body of matter, It would affect its vibrations and its relationship with the body of matter to such an extent that disease would begin in the body of matter. Anger can affect the spleen. Jealousy can affect the liver.
Those things cause maladjustment. The perfect balance is distorted and the harmony is upset. When the body becomes so diseased that the balance is completely upset, then the body of spirit is compelled to sever itself because it can no longer express itself through that body, and death takes place.
If a person lost an arm of the physical body, how would that affect the etheric body?
There is nothing that would happen to the arm of the etheric body, but there would be a lack of adjustment between the two arms. The etheric arm could not function while you were in the body of matter. You have never heard us say that any case is hopeless. There is always hope. But there are many factors that have to be taken into consideration.
There is the body of matter, the body of spirit and the vital cord or lifeline between them. As disease, infirmity, or age creep over the body of matter, there is a gradual loosening in the adjustment between the two bodies, because the severance from the world of matter is gradually being effected. There are three causes of disease-physical, mental, and spiritual. A broken arm could be set spiritually, but it would be easier to deal with it physically.
How do you reconcile hereditary disease with perfect justice?
You get the body you have earned. You start this life on earth with what you earned in your last life. You start in one incarnation with what you deserved when you ended your last. But hereditary disease does not put you at an unfair disadvantage, because you each have the instrument that will enable you to fulfil what is necessary for your evolution.

Questions and Answers:
SOME people can be healed by mediums, and others are not. Are they different kinds of cases, regarded from the point of view of the evolution of their souls?
No. If they are to pass into my world, there is no healer in your world who can prevent their passing.
But some who go to healers would otherwise pass on. A few days, more or less, what are they in eternity?
Does not that make healing rather unnecessary?
No, because to express service is to express the Great Spirit. Much of your sickness and disease is not due to the evolution of the soul, but because, in ignorance, man lives contrary to the Law. It is true that he lives contrary to the Law because his soul has not yet reached the state of evolution where he understands the Law. When your soul has so expressed itself in evolution that it is at one with the Law, there is no sickness then.
If two people suffer from a disease, from the same cause, and one is healed while the other is not, does not that seem unjust?
Do you think it is by chance that people go to healers? It is not chance. There is no chance, in your world or in mine. I tell you the Law is perfect. One day you will understand its operations and, like myself, you will be smitten with wonder at the Perfect Love which fashioned the Perfect Law
All of us—and I say this of myself, tooーgrope in the dark, seeing sometimes a flash of light and an insight into the Law. We wonder, but, because when we are in the dark we do not see the Law, we think of chance, we think of accident. I tell you there is no chance.
I know you will say: "But what about free will;" Yes, you have free will, but is not your free will subject to the evolution of your soul: It is free, but its freedom is regulated by your soul's growth. It is free, but it is chained to the laws of the universe, which control all things. Nothing escapes the Law, whether you point to the mightiest organization in the universe or the tiniest speck of minute life. Nothing escapes the Law. The Law is perfect.
How does spiritual healing operating through a medium differ from magnetic healing by a medium?
They are quite different. Magnetic healing is dependent on the radiations of the medium's own psychic powers. Spiritual healing is dependent upon the instrument being attuned to the vibrations of the spirit, so that rays, which are normally beyond the range of the world of matter, can be sent through the medium.
Is it possible for a cure to be effected upon identical twins suffering identically, after the medical profession has given up hope. by help and assistance from the Other Side?
I cannot say. There is a power of the spirit which can be used for the relief and for the cure of disease, but it is depen-dent on the fitness of instruments, or mediums, through which to function. You have not reached in your world of matter the zenith of the Great Spirit's power for healing His child-ren. As your instruments evolve, so more of that power can
be given through them. It is dependent on your world as
much as on ours. We are all mediums. Behind this medium I am. Behind me there are those greater than I, and behind them there are those greater than they. That chain stretches on to infinity
Silver Birch used these words when he dedicated W. T. Parish's new healing sanctuary at East Sheen, London:
I DEDICATE this temple to the service of the Great Spirit and His children. This is a hallowed spot where the two worlds of matter and spirit merge and become one, where the power of the Great Spirit reveals itself.
I dedicate this temple to all those afflicted in mind, soul and body, to those in torment and trouble, to those who are in the darkness, to those who are tired and weary. They will come here and the light of love will embrace them in its healing rays.
I dedicate this temple to the service of raising up those who are cast down, helping the fallen, giving strength to the weak, courage to the timid, laughter to tired, tear-stained faces.
I ask you to think not so much of the beauty of the building, of the bricks and the mortar, but of the spiritual temple which is the reality.
I ask you to realize that, though there is no majestic steeple and none of the things which men think make a place a house of God, because they have called it so, this is a house of God because His power has blessed it, because it is a repository of His spirit.
Within these four walls great service will be rendered. There will come here, time and time again, those who are cast by the wayside in the battle of life, those who have been broken in body and in spirit, those who are racked with pain and sickness and disease.
They will come as a last hope and here the power of the spirit will bring them new vigour. They will become re-freshed and strengthened and all that which prevents their spirits from functioning in a bruised and broken temple will be cast on one side.
The blind will be made to see; the deaf will be made to hear; the cripple will cast away his affliction. New hope will dawn, for the power of the spirit, bringing healing in its train, will enable them to face life again.
More important still, their spirits will be touched. The flame of the Great Spirit which, in many cases, will have burned very low, will become re-kindled, and out of that experience there will come a new realization because they have been touched by the power of the spirit.
To perform that task you require no vestments and no training in the colleges of men, but only the desire to serve, and to express the gifts of the spirit, raising yourself up to become an instrument of the mighty forces which always seek to flow through channels so that they can be used in your world of matter.
